Karner Blue Education Center
Completed May 2019
Over a period of 3 years, FBD worked alongside the Karner Blue Education Center to create a set of playground instruments to be used by the students. Karner Blue Education center specializes in meeting the needs of students with autism, emotional behavioral disorders and developmental cognitive disabilities, and as of writing, Karner Blue serves more than 100 students around the Northeast Twin Cities Metro area.
FBD designed and built 3 sets of instruments for the education center's outdoor playground: a large xylophone, a series of drum walls and nine cajón drums. The instruments were installed and unveiled on May 15, 2019, and both instructors and students were delighted with the end product.
Each instrument was designed custom for the “musical playground” Karner Blue was building. The thrust of these designs, therefore, were to connect students to nature via music. The first instrument completed was the xylophone, completed in 2017. It is designed using two sets of crossing bars connected by tension wire with the bells hung in between. The second set of instruments, completed in 2018, was a set of “drum walls” created using wire frames holding various sizes of drums. The final set, completed in early 2019 was a set of 9 cajón drums which tied the area together and added seating for the students and instructors.
